The common way to set trademarks apart from other words is to capitalize the product name and use the appropriate trademark status symbol and the appropriate descriptor. You may also use underlining, italic type, or bold for the name.

  • Correct: Shearer Group™ Professional Real Estate Services
  • Incorrect: Shearer Group™ services

Use Trademark Notices

Include an attribution of Shearer Group ownership of the trademark(s) in the credit notice section of your documentation or advertisement. Here is one example of the format to follow:

  • Shearer Vacant Home Care is a trademark of Shearer Group, Inc.

Do Not Shorten, Abbreviate, or Create Acronyms from Shearer Group Trademarks

Shearer Group trademarks should never be abbreviated, shortened, or have acronyms created to represent the trademark.

  • Incorrect: I did not realize the level of service provided by SVHC until I had experienced it.

Do Not Use Shearer Group Trademarks in Possessive or Plural Forms

Shearer Group trademarks should never be used in the possessive or plural forms. They should be used as a proper adjective followed by an appropriate descriptor.

  • Correct: XYZ Corporation relies upon the Shearer Group™ for professional real estate services.
  • Incorrect: We use Shearer Group's services.

First Use, Later Use

First-use, later-use trademark usage is dependent on the continuous visual surface where information appears. A "visual surface" varies from medium to medium. A "visual surface" may be a single-page or a two-page spread, a printed electronic presentation screen, a trade show booth panel, or the side of a package. Use your best judgment to determine the amount of continuous surface that can be seen at any one time by your audience.

Every time a new visual surface is presented to a reader or viewer, you need to apply our first-use rules to our trademarks. You may want to apply later-use rules to subsequent cases of the same trademark on the same visual surface to make content more reader-friendly. Applying our later-use guidelines is optional.

  • First-Use: Use our word trademarks, trademark status symbols, and appropriate descriptors the first time the trademark appears. Trademarks should be used as outlined in the previous paragraph about each new visual surface. Our first-use rules apply to every photo or illustration caption even if the full product name has been used elsewhere on the surface.
  • Later-Use Word Marks: After our full word trademark has been used on a surface, capitalize our trademarks as indicated in our trademark list and use lowercase for descriptors. You do not need to precede trademarks with "Shearer Group" when the service trademark includes "Shearer."

Translate Descriptors, But Not Trademarks

Descriptors must always be translated, not transliterated. In some languages, the descriptor precedes the trademark.

Transliterate Trademarks Only When Necessary

Transliteration means writing the trademark phonetically in another language so when it is pronounced it sounds similar to the original English language trademark. However, great care should be used in transliteration because you may be creating a new trademark. Depending on the custom of the language, we suggest you place the transliteration in proximity to the first-use of our trademark then continue with our trademark in the remainder of the visual surface.

Logo Marks

Do not use Shearer Group logos on or in connection with products, packaging, manuals, promotional or advertising material, or on Web sites for any purpose except pursuant to an express written trademark license from Shearer Group, Incorporated.

Endorsement of Sponsorship

Do not use our trademarks in any manner that expresses or implies Shearer Group affiliation, sponsorship, endorsement, certification, or approval except pursuant to an express written trademark license from Shearer Group, Incorporated.

Merchandise Items

Do not manufacture, sell, or give away merchandise items such as T-shirts or mugs that bear any Shearer Group trademarks or logos.

Do Not Alter Trademarks

Always use Shearer Group trademarks in an approved manner. Our trademarks may not be altered by abbreviation, using different case, spelling changes, or other similar actions. Never superimpose over a trademark.

Policy Changes and List Updates

Our trademarks policy may change from time to time. We will post any changes to our trademark policy on this page.
